Will You Subconsciously Choose Drug Addiction Relapse?

The reason that anyone chooses one behavior over another—even if that behavior will ultimately destroy them, is because they are able to rationalize the decision as the best one.  Logically, it seems ridiculous to think that we could rationalize destroying our bodies, or lives, and our families, but that is the state of an addict’s mind.  This is what has to change in order to prevent drug addiction relapse.

Most of this rationalization takes place on a subconscious level.  And although you must ultimately take the responsibility of your life, most people who experience a drug addiction relapse do so because they have not experienced a treatment program that was able to reach that part of the self that can justify choosing a life of chemical dependency and misery over a life of authentic joy and fulfillment.

The problem isn’t that shorter term drug and alcohol recovery centers don’t do a fine job at their intended goal—they do. Most of these programs are designed to detox the body and provide an introduction to the twelve step program.  For some, this is enough to prevent drug addiction relapse.  But others, perhaps you, need more.  Many people like me need to practice the disciplines of the twelve steps and learn how to make those practices a permanent way of life.

An Experiential Drug Addiction Relapse Prevention Program

The process of learning to avoid drug addiction relapse and live with sobriety requires a collection of experiences and revelations brought about by those experiences.  Understanding the insanity of addiction and learning how to overcome it can’t fully be grasped through talking or reading books alone.  It is something that must be lived.  More so, it is the process of taking a journey of personal and emotional set backs, failures, disappointments, and working through them to achieve success and balance without drugs and alcohol that will start you on the path to permanent recovery.

It affected me tremendously during the years that I worked with shorter term facilities to know that many of those graduating would eventually experience drug addiction relapse.  I could see that although their bodies were free of the poison of drugs and alcohol, they hadn’t learned how to replace these destructive behaviors with practices that would truly prevent a drug addiction relapse.

It was for this reason that I left the employment of one of the finest drug treatment centers in the United States and established the Mark Houston Recovery Center.  Nestled among 70 acres of rolling Texas landscape, my ranch-style, family setting Recovery Center offers a 90 day program that helps men take the journey of experience required to prevent drug addiction relapse and live a life of permanent sobriety.

What Are You Willing to Do To Live a Life of Permanent Sobriety?
